If you’re a home owner with a spare room going then renting out your room is most definitely the fastest and easiest way to make some quick and regular cash with the added bonus that it could be tax-free!

The government’s Rent a Room Scheme allows you to rent out a furnished room for up to £4250 tax free. If you don’t fill out a tax return normally then as long as the total rental income is under the threshold of £4250, you don’t have to declare anything. There is nothing stopping you renting your room or empty property for more although you would be liable to complete a tax return declaring the full income you earn if it exceeds the threshold. For more information on the scheme, tax and tips on how to advertise your spare room checkout: www.direct.gov.uk www.spareroom.co.uk and www.rentnotbuy.co.uk

Alternatively, if you can provide a friendly home environment and are willing to help a foreign student learn about British culture and improve their English language skills then why not offer your spare room for rent through a homestay accommodation scheme with an English Language School. You can earn between £75 to £200 depending on the type and size of your property and whether you are willing to provide additional services such as meals and laundry. You have the piece of mind that the school will handle the admin of placing the student. Most of the English Language schools will have certain requirements you and your property may need to meet before they accept you onto their listings.

Currently Frances King and the London School of English [www.francesking.co.uk www.londonschool.com] are both accepting email enquiries to become homestay hosts and you can learn more about what becoming a host involves from www.londonhomestays.com

Cash earning potential: £70 – £150 per day. For an ongoing study anything up to £3000. Payment made after completion of trial.

Clinical trials are conducted to research and develop potential or existing treatments and cures. Most clinical trials involve the testing of a new drug known as Phase 1, after laboratory and animal testing, on healthy human volunteers,. The Phase 1 trial is normally a study into the safety of the drug and involves monitoring dosage, how the drug passes through the human body and what side effects occur, if any. You can also volunteer for non-invasive trials which may be research into sleep, nutrition, psychology, cognitive studies, or alternatively volunteers can be paid for blood, egg and sperm donations.

Trials can be on an in or out-patient basis often requiring a stay in the research facility up to 7 days. Ongoing trials last a few months and require attending follow up appointments. The research facilities are comfortable and provide a private room, TV, video games, food, and cover your transport costs as well as compensation for your time at the end of the trial. There are risks to any medical experimentation; however these risks tend to be low. Any new drug trials must have approval from governmental ethics research committee and from The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency [MHRA]. Also prior to your clinical trial you should be given all the information relating to the drug you are taking and an opportunity to ask questions before you give your full consent to participate. You can pull out from a clinical trial however it may mean you will not receive any payment for your time.

You can learn more by registering your interest with a clinical research organisation such as Richmond Pharmacology at Trialsforus.co.uk or Surrey Clinical Research Centre and they contact you to find out about you and your health. You would then be invited for screening tests such as height, weight, ECG, blood tests etc. to confirm your suitability. For further information also check out the websites below:

It is now the case that all the all the mobile network incumbents and a large proportion of the handset manufacturers are offering some kind of music download service. Nokia have their “Comes with Music” which gives users the ability to download and keep an unlimited number of songs for a set price every month. Orange has teamed up with T4 to create the “Music Monkey” service where pay as you go customers are entitled to get access to hundreds of thousands of albums and singles. Vodafone has had an established music service for some time. It allows you to own individual tracks from 48p, the most you’ll pay is 99p and get full albums from just £4.99. They also have an unlimited service for £4.99 per month which gives access to 1.6million tracks.

This is just a broad cross section but you will get the general idea. These companies are basically giving music away and as yet I am struggling to see how it will be possible to remunerate any artist for the distribution of their music via this business model. It is obviously the case that licensing deals and fees have had to be negotiated with all relevant labels in order to supply music to their services. This will be generating some revenue for the labels but what about the artists? If for example out of the average £5 per month charge for unlimited downloads and the average person downloads 50 songs, with label fees and the mobile company cut an artist would be considered lucky to earn 1p!

At a mobile music lecture some months ago an industry veteran posed a very interesting question to the heads of mobile music for Vodafone and Nokia. He asked why neither of these companies had decided not to invest any money in artists but continued to reap millions from their creative endeavours. He was of course met with silence and quickly brushed off. I think he raises a valid point. These firms have resources to help develop new artists. Not only do they have the money, something that most labels are struggling with at the moment, they also have a solid route to market with their captive audience to distribute the music to.

I think the main reason behind the silence was because of the realisation that these guys actually know very little about music. They may have a solid understanding of the number of users they have subscribed to their music services and how much revenue their music service generates but they do not actually have an appreciation for what it is that actually goes into making the product they are delivering. They do not understand the hours that it takes sitting in a room with a guitar or a piano waiting for that riff to drop out of the ether or the feeling of listening the final mix of a track that has been months in the making. This is relevant because it means that they are completely incapable of placing a value on an entity that is not entirely understood by them.

Maybe the only way to redress this current imbalance would be for the mobile companies to start buying up labels. Perhaps the sale of EMI’s recorded music division to Vodafone would be a start and it might actually provide a realistic exit strategy for venture capital firm Terra Firma that currently own it.

Think you will be hearing quite a lot from this guy in the next few months. His debut album “Butter” is due for release on the 26th October and from what we’ve heard its SICK! You can hear most of it by following the link below.

He is a previous DMC finalist and has now devloped his production skills to pretty impressive levels on this new record.

Ingredients:

‘Best in’ toms 69p (most standard corner stores)
one bulb of garlic 29p somerfield
red split lentils: 99p per pac (somewhere)
onion 19p or 6 for a pund
dried spaghetti, supermarket own brand circa 49p
small handful of basil (49p)
tomato puree supermarket brand desert spoons worth (39p)
Salt, pepper, pinch of sugar

This dish is cheap to make and when you have invested in the lentils they will be a punk cash favourite to keep in the cupboard. A good source of protein, as well and the toms are good for your lycopene intake, helpful apparently if you want to ward off…..
cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and even male infertility.[19]

Fry off your onion and some garlic in some oil, preferably olive if its about and a small know of butter to add to the flavour (about 3/4 cloves are good, don’t worry people always overdoing it but no need) wait till gently brown then add your puree, followed by the tomatoes, the seasoning and bring gently to the boil. At this point add about 200 ml of water and a good shake of lentils, about 3 table spoons worth again bring this to the boil when it has got there bring it down to a simmer at this point check you seasoning add a pinch of sugar if necessary leave to gently simmer for about 30 minutes or until the lentils are actually tender and have absorbed the water and are cooked through. Obviously at this point you would have thought about putting on your tescos / asda /somerfield fine spaghetti at least 10 minutes before the end. Spaghetti is done when you take one out and throw it against the wall and it doesn’t fall off, though obviously don’t lace all of it against the wall as that would be a waste (of your punk cash).

At the end bring it off the heat add your basil and do it like the Italians do, have a separate bowl where you will toss the spaghetti and tom sauce together then file into one bowl. Serve with ericas hot pepper sauce on the side. that will sort you and a mate. Joy of joys. The you will have enough stuff to make this again at least 3 times over. So v cheap really if you look at it that way.

This vid should keep you amused while you eat:

Make a toastie using an iron
